Album of the Week

"george gershwin"

You put together of the great female vocalists and a muscial polymath in a small band setting, sprinkle in some terrific Gershwin tune and put a fresh Hirschfeld drawing onthe cover and you have "Nice Work If You Can Get it" by Ella Fitzgerald and Andre Previn. Produced by longtime jazz impresario Norman Granz (who was also Ella's manager) and released in 1983, this album also has wonderful liner notes by Benny Green.

Hirschfeld has been enjoying Ella's music since first seeing her at the Apollo Theater in the 1930s. He had been friends witht he Gershwins since they were kids. Hirschfeld had also provided drawings to promote a number of Previn's earliest films such Three Little Words and Bad Day at Black Rock. this assignment was obviously a joy for Hirschfeld to work on.

This weekly series features a new album cover every Wednesday.
